We at Telefónica Open Gateway have released new developments that promise to reshape the interaction between networks and the next generation of digital services. All of this can be seen at Mobile World Congress 2025, the world's largest and most influential connectivity event, where the world's tech giants, global governments, disruptive startups and investors come together to connect and create the future.
Since its launch two years ago at this very meeting, the initiative has revolutionised the telecommunications sector by turning networks into programmable platforms. This has facilitated the development of apps that are enhancing the digitisation of sectors such as banking, e-commerce, logistics and transport. In this edition, our agenda has been packed with presentations and demonstrations that stress our tangible impact on the industry. From sessions in our Agora, to presence in various stands at Fira Barcelona, we have spread the news about how our network APIs are accelerating the development of new innovative experiences and benefiting all stakeholders the digital ecosystem.
One of the most outstanding presentations was "Open Collaboration to Innovate", given by Chema Alonso, who shared the milestones reached since the start of the project and the new strategic agreements with major companies from all over the world. These collaborations have not only reinforced the growth and potential of the initiative, but have also demonstrated the applicability of APIs in various verticals, from optimising the applications of large international tech firms to the digitisation of public services.
Most notable announcements made at Mobile World Congress 2025
Expansion of the TikTok partnership in Europe
TikTok, the leading mobile short video platform, continues its partnership with Open Gateway with a presence in Europe. At Mobile World Congress 2024, this partnership was already announced to improve sign up processes in the application using API Number Verification. This tool allows users' identities to be verified without the need to enter credentials or one-time passwords, thus streamlining the process and reducing the risks associated with traditional methods such as SMS OTP. Initial deployment of the solution will begin in Brazil in the first half of 2025, with plans to expand to other strategic markets.
In addition, collaboration with the new Age Verification API has been announced, which is being developed within the CAMARA framework. It will combine key functionalities from existing solutions, such as Number Verification and Know Your Customer-Match APIs, to verify user's age and complement TikTok's existing verification measures. With this initiative, both companies are strengthening their commitment to digital security and the creation of age-appropriate experiences.
Improved onboarding processes for Cabify
Likewise, the strategic agreement with Cabify was unveiled, alongside Carlos Herrar Yague, CTO at Cabify. It is one of the most important urban mobility platforms in Spain and will feature the use of network APIs in its application. In particular, the integration of the Number Verification API will optimise user onboarding processes. They will be able to sign up directly in the application without the need to receive an SMS or other third party verification system. With this API, Cabify adds additional layers of security and offers a much more agile and fluid experience.
Digitisation of public services with the Community of Madrid
Finally, the collaboration between Telefónica and the Madrid regional government was announced. Miguel López-Valverde Argüeso, Minister of Digitalisation of the Community of Madrid, took the stage to talk about this agreement that aims to boost the digital transformation of public services through the adoption of Open Gateway. The integration of the initiative's APIs will improve efficiency and accessibility in key sectors such as health, transport, justice and tourism. With this collaboration, the Community of Madrid has taken a step forward, promoting a more connected and innovative model that adapts to the needs of citizens.
Joint Innovation Centre with AWS
With Ishwar Parulkar, Chief Technologist for Telecom and Edge Cloud at AWS, our Chief Digital Officer presented the creation of an innovation centre for the development of SaaS products for enterprises. This initiative will combine Telefónica's expertise in telecommunications data management with the cloud infrastructure and data analytics capabilities of AWS. It was shown how the aim of this collaboration is to democratise access to technology through "plug and play" platforms that allow companies to adopt advanced solutions without the need to manage technical complexity. Through the integration of Open Gateway APIs, products will be developed that optimise data management and the application of generative artificial intelligence, facilitating strategic decision-making in various business sectors.
Presence on Google Firebase development platform
Chema Alonso and Christiaan Brand, Product Manager for Identity and Security at Google, have announced the incorporation of Open Gateway into Google Firebase. This platform, which has more than three million developers, simplifies the process of developing web and mobile applications. Our presence will address key challenges such as consent management and fragmented billing experiences.
One of the first use cases to be implemented is the reinforcement of user authentication processes with our API Number Verification. With this API and the support of other Telco partners such as AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, T-Mobile and Telenor, Firebase developers will be able to improve the security and reliability of their applications. This will serve to create new revenue opportunities for both communications service providers (CSPs) and the developers themselves.
