Device Location Verification API

The standardised Device Location Verification API provides the option of verifying the geographical location of a given SIM-based device and validating whether it’s within a requested geographical area without spoofing or GPS theft.

This solution validates the location of a device to enable services or allow transactions by verifying the location.

What can it be used for?

The standardised Device Location Verification API provides the option of verifying the geographical location of a given SIM-based device and validating whether it is within a requested geographical area without spoofing or GPS.

This solution validates the location of a device to enable services or allow transactions by verifying the location.

Fast and reliable location

Device Location Verification provides you with a quick and easy way to validate the geographic location of your customers, allowing you to keep your application under control, and to add new functionalities to your service, such as anti-fraud strategies, personalisation or advertising.

Theft-free gps

Device Location performs location verification based on the network information that the Telco carrier handles to provide its mobile telephony service. So verification is free of device spoofing and GPS theft or emulation.

Risk prevention

By combining this API with complementary APIs such as Number Verification, Device Swap or Know Your Customer - Match, you can strengthen the security of your service to enhance the user experience, ensuring control of your service and minimising identity risks.

Simplified integration

As it is a standardised API, you can integrate the payment method into your applications without the need to customise implementations for each carrier. This simplifies the development process and reduces time to market.

Footprint for your identity service

The standardisation of this API provides uniform access to different telecommunication companies. This expands the footprint of your business and ensures consistency and versatility between different carriers.

Use cases

Financial services & insurance E-commerce & retail

Security in location-dependent transactions

This makes it possible to strengthen the security of a transaction, for example, when a customer makes a payment through a POS terminal, or performs a transaction at an ATM, by validating that the user's location is the same as that of the POS terminal or ATM. In this way, any location-dependent transactions can be verified to reduce the risks related to account takeover and other types of identity fraud.

The digitalisation of transactions is increasing, however, every digital transaction takes place in a real physical space. The Device Location Verification API makes it possible to connect the two worlds, verifying that a user's device is actually located where the transaction is taking place.

Financial services & insurances

Smarter banks

Daycoval is one of the most recognised financial institutions in Brazil, with more than USD 13 billion in assets. Thanks to Open Gateway, it has begun collaborating with Vivo, Telefonica's carrier in Brazil, to explore the benefits that telco APIs can have in bringing a better user experience to its digital services. One of the areas for improvement in the banking applications is the process of signing up for a new product or opening a new account. Thanks to the integration of Device Location Verification, Daycoval can ask Vivo to verify the location of its users to automate steps when performing different banking operations. This allows for the development of new, smarter and more efficient fintech services, increasing customer satisfaction.

Drone fleet control

The delivery of parcels by drone requires reliable location control to ensure the location of the devices in real time with maximum security. Ericsson and Vonage are teaming up to offer developers the ability to integrate Open Gateway solutions to enhance their users experience of Open Gateway applications. By integrating the Device Location Verification API, advanced network capabilities can be incorporated to quickly and easily verify a drone's position. This makes it possible to develop new applications that provide maximum security in controlling drone fleets.

Major sporting events

There is nothing more exciting than live football matches, and being able to offer fans all sorts of exclusive content or extras while watching a match at the stadium itself takes the user experience to new heights. Ericsson and Vonage are teaming up to offer developers the ability to integrate new Open Gateway APIs, such as Device Location Verification, to verify a user's location and provide them with content such as goal replays, extra content such as line-ups or scores, or view the match from different angles. This allows for the development of new applications and premium functionalities that enrich the user experience.

Media, entertainment & XR

Enhanced immersive entertainment

Yerba Buena Virtual Reality (YBVR) is a company that markets streaming immersive video experiences for virtual reality glasses. YBVR Arena allows its users to enjoy immersive sporting events in the stadium via their mobile phones. It thus caters for the new consumer habits in the entertainment and sports sector, which is seeing an increasing demand for immersive and participatory formats. Integrating the Device Location Verification API, and using AWS Wavelength technology, it can verify whether the user is inside the stadium with GPS-based location in order to enable access to exclusive content. The location validation process is fast and reliable, preventing potential fraud such as spoofing.

FAQs

The CAMARA Device Location Verification API is a standardized API that enables developers to verify whether a SIM based device is in a certain geographical area defined by the coordinates (latitude-longitude) and a radius (in Km).

CAMARA, the open-source project led by the Linux Foundation in collaboration with the GSMA, aims to universalise network APIs under the same standards for all telecommunications companies.

The GSMA plays a key role in setting standards and guidelines for Device Location Verification, ensuring consistency and interoperability across the industry.

Unified API Access provides a single, standardized API for accessing telco capabilities across different network operators, simplifying integration for developers.

By using Device Location Verification API, companies can connect the physical and digital worlds, since everything happens somewhere. Companies can evaluate fraud risk of a transaction, registration or operation by verifying that they are happening where they are supposed to be happening. Companies can also enable or disable specific features of their services according to the location of their clients. Also, companies can take marketing actions once the location of their customers is verified.

A wide range of industries are interested in improving their services by verifying the location of their customers. Industries like Financial Services & Insurances, Social & Customer Engagement, IoT, Media, Entertainment & XR, can shape the features of their services using location information provided by this API.

When using Device Location Verification, safe and reliable authentication and authorization procedures are followed to control the access to the API and to retrieve the consent of the end user.

There are several kinds of fraud that can be tackled and blocked by using the Device Location Verification API, since it lets you validate that customers using a service are where they are supposed to be. This can be used not only in the financial industry, but also in the delivery of any digital service (gaming, streaming, etc.). The business of the company is then protected, and the customers themselves are protected from being affected by fraudulent actions.

A company can personalize the way their services are delivered according to the location of their customers. For example, companies can differentiate or adapt their services from city to city or personalize the service while the customers are travelling. A company can also personalize the delivery of physical goods and services (food delivery, parcel delivery, home help services, etc.), and can deliver special services in specific events that occur in specific places.

Device Location Verification API is usually available to be used for all customers of MNOs. But consent from them must be retrieved. This is done following the authorization flow when the developer sends the first API request.
