Use cases

Prevention of the risks of identity theft

With the increase in online transactions, such as shopping, banking or social interactions, our personal information is spread across different digital platforms and databases. It is therefore increasingly important to implement robust cybersecurity measures to prevent the growth of synthetic identity fraud or phishing. The KYC-Match API allows you to validate contact information provided by customers with reliable data available from mobile network operators' records. This promotes the convenience of digital onboarding and, at the same time, reduces the risks of identity fraud.

Improvement of the conversion rate & quality of user databases

When signing up new customers, it is important to ensure that the contact information they provide is accurate. Fake accounts reduce the quality of your user database and give you a false sense of a good conversion rate. The KYC - Match API, with its reliable user information validation system, allows you to create higher-quality databases. This translates into a better understanding of your customers so that you can invest time and effort in them, better target your strategic business decisions and take meaningful actions.

Automating login & transactions

The login process for certain mobile applications requires a manual process where users must prove that they are the owner of the device where they have signed in the application (Level of Authentication 2 or LOA2). This system is also used to authorise and perform transactions in banking applications. To do so, they employ the SMS-OTP method which allows the application to validate that the user is using the registered mobile phone and requires the user to interact, e.g. by copying and pasting a code. The Number Verification system is a more convenient and reliable alternative to this verification, as it allows these transactions and logins to be validated without user interaction.

Reinforcement of TAN procedures in banking transactions

The integration of the SIM Swap API can enforce Transaction Authentication Number (TAN) procedures. By adding an additional layer of verification through SIM Swap, banks can ensure that TAN-based transactions are not only authorised by the user, but are also executed through a secure SIM environment, minimising the risk of unauthorised access and fraud attempts.

Mitigation of fraud

Preventing and addressing fraudulent activities during banking transactions is key to a successful user experience. Device Status can detect and mitigate fraud in transactions that involve suspicious SIM cards potentially in roaming status. This increases the security of the transactions and guarantees the integrity of the users’ data.

Case studies

More secure banking transactions

Daycoval is one of the best-known financial institutions in Brazil, with assets totalling over 13 billion dollars. Thanks to Open Gateway, it’s teamed up with Vivo, Telefónica’s carrier in Brazil, to explore the benefits that telco APIs can bring by enhancing the user experience in its digital services, such as increasing the security of its users’ banking transactions. By integrating the Device Status API it’s possible to ask the network to verify the location of a user’s SIM card and detect whether he/she is in roaming status. This information provides Daycoval with greater control over risks and increases its customers’ peace of mind.

The solution permits Daycoval to reinforce fraud prevention in its banking products by requesting the location of a user’s SIM card, once the customer’s prior consent has been received.

Smarter banks

Daycoval is one of the most recognised financial institutions in Brazil, with more than USD 13 billion in assets. Thanks to Open Gateway, it has begun collaborating with Vivo, Telefonica's carrier in Brazil, to explore the benefits that telco APIs can have in bringing a better user experience to its digital services. One of the areas for improvement in the banking applications is the process of signing up for a new product or opening a new account. Thanks to the integration of Device Location Verification, Daycoval can ask Vivo to verify the location of its users to automate steps when performing different banking operations. This allows for the development of new, smarter and more efficient fintech services, increasing customer satisfaction.

Smarter banks

Transactions entailing a lower risk of digital fraud

Itaú is Brazil's biggest private bank and the largest financial conglomerate in the southern hemisphere. Following the digital transformation of the fintech sector, it's had to address new challenges to maintain its customers' security when they perform transactions via its online channels. With the integration of Telefónica Open Gateway's SIM Swap API, Itaú can prevent potential SIM swapping crimes and verify the identities of its customers to enable these processes. It can thus offer a more efficient and secure experience for its users.

Banking onboardings with an extra layer of security

Daycoval is one of the most important banking institutions in Brazil, specialising in credit to companies and private individuals. In recent years it's made great strides in its digitisation, opting for more modern channels to bring its services closer to users. By doing so, it's being faced with new security challenges associated with online scams. Integrating the SIM Swap API can reduce the risk of fraud related to SIM card exchanges. This standardised tool can reinforce the security of its onboarding processes by detecting suspicious SIM card movements and preventing identity theft. It also optimises the user experience, as it's a streamlined and simple process for its customers.
