SIM Swap API

The standardised SIM Swap API allows you to integrate SIM swap detection and management functionality into your applications, enhancing security by identifying potentially fraudulent activity and providing an additional layer of protection.

This solution leverages data from the carrier's network, allowing the protocols and security measures of any service to be adjusted quickly and proportionately.

What can it be used for?

The integration of this API helps in the fight against fraud related to anomalous SIM exchange events, which may indicate a risk of account takeover fraud. This enables tighter security in account creation processes, user authentication and offers a better user experience.

In addition, SIM Swap's Unified API Access feature guarantees you access to the network capabilities of different carriers through a single, standardised interface.

STRENGTHENING OF THE SECOND AUTHENTICATION FACTOR

SIM Swap amplifies traditional 2FA that assesses transaction risk levels, based on recent SIM events. This ensures user identity and transaction security, while offering developers a smarter and more adaptable security solution.

SECURE ACCOUNT CREATION

Thanks to the SIM Swap API, potentially fraudulent actions can be detected before creating new user accounts. The tool allows you to prevent personal data such as addresses from being changed or password resets from being initiated.

FRAUD DETECTION

With the SIM Swap API, it is more feasible to monitor all SIM-related activities, as alerts are triggered for any anomalous behaviour. This allows your applications to react quickly in real time to possible risks under any suspicion circumstances.

SIMPLIFIED INTEGRATION

As it is a standardised API, you can integrate the SIM Swap service into your applications without the need to customise implementations for each carrier. This simplifies the development process and reduces time to market.

UNIFORM ACCESS TO THE FUNCTIONS OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS COMPANIES

CAMARA's standardised API provides consistent access to various telecom carrier capabilities, such as SIM Swap detection, through a unified interface. This ensures uniformity and adaptability across different carriers and markets.

IMPROVED DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCE

This API promotes an easy-to-use model for developers. This saves time and effort, while ensuring a consistent and reliable user experience. This speeds time to market and fosters a more efficient development ecosystem.

FAQs

The SIM Swap API is a technology solution that allows developers to integrate the SIM card swap detection and management functionality into their applications. It helps bolster security by identifying potentially fraudulent activity and provides an additional layer of protection against unauthorised access.

CAMARA, the open-source project led by the Linux Foundation in collaboration with the GSMA, aims to universalise network APIs under the same standards for all telecommunications companies.

The GSMA plays a key role in setting quality of service standards and guidelines, ensuring consistency and interoperability among all telecommunications companies that have adopted the Open Gateway project.

The API works by interacting with mobile network data to monitor SIM-related activities. It detects any anomalous behaviour, such as sudden or multiple SIM changes, which could indicate possible fraudulent activity. When such activities are detected, alerts can be triggered, allowing real-time response and preventive measures to be taken.

The use of the SIM Swap API offers several advantages, such as increased security, fraud prevention, better user verification and the ability to proactively respond to potential threats. It strengthens authentication methods and helps maintain the integrity of user accounts.

The SIM Swap API can be integrated into a variety of use cases, such as banking transactions, two-factor authentication, healthcare applications, e-commerce and government services, among others. It provides better security and prevents unauthorised access in situations where the user's identity is critical.

By monitoring and analysing SIM-related activities, the API can identify suspicious patterns that could indicate fraudulent behaviour. The API also sends the timestamp of the mobile's last MSISDN <-> IMSI pairing change.

By preventing unauthorised access and fraudulent activities, the API increases users' trust in applications. Users can feel more secure knowing that their accounts are protected by proactive measures against identity theft and unauthorised access.

The SIM Swap API complements existing security measures by adding an additional layer of protection. It works alongside authentication methods such as passwords, two-factor authentication and biometrics to improve the overall security posture of an application.

The SIM Swap API can be used in conjunction with other security solutions, such as device isolation and device status (roaming). The integration of multiple layers of security can create a more complete and robust defence against a variety of threats.

Early detection helps to avoid potential financial losses by identifying and addressing suspicious SIM-related activities before they lead to unauthorised access and transactions. This proactive approach protects both user accounts and business results.

Early detection undoubtedly minimises the risk of reputational damage caused by security breaches. By nipping potential threats in the bud, companies can avoid negative publicity and maintain a positive brand image.
