Telefónica Open Gateway and Bluenest by Globalvia have strengthened their collaboration to accelerate innovation in the drone ecosystem, combining advanced connectivity with air mobility solutions to unlock new market opportunities.
This partnership is part of the European U-ELCOME project, designed to support the roll-out of U-Space services and procedures for the safe and efficient integration of drone traffic into European airspace.
As part of this collaboration, on 17 September 2025, and within the framework of European Mobility Week, Madrid hosted the event ‘The Future of Medical Transport’. The highlight was a live demonstration of a logistics drone flight between Hospital Carlos III and Hospital Universitario La Paz. The purpose was to showcase the potential of medical air logistics to speed up the delivery of critical supplies, cut delivery times, and improve emergency response.
A collaboration already delivering results
This initiative builds on solid foundations: Bluenest has already conducted several flight trials with the support of Telefónica Open Gateway. These include a pilot programme for urgent medicine transport in La Gomera, as well as demonstrations at Hospital Universitario de Cantoblanco and the Port of Seville. Each of these real-world scenarios has validated the technology’s ability to deliver safer, more efficient operations.
The technology making it possible
For the Madrid demonstration, Bluenest provided its vertiport management technology (VCS), weather control systems, and FATO monitoring using computer vision, while Telefónica Open Gateway provided a set of key APIs:
These capabilities enable operators to plan safe routes, ensure mission continuity, and comply with regulations, improving safety not just during take-off and landing, but along the entire flight path.
A key step towards U-Space
With these initiatives, Spain is taking important strides in deploying U-Space, the ecosystem that will enable the safe and efficient integration of drones into our airspace. By incorporating real-time mobile network data, drone operations can scale up in urban, healthcare, and densely populated environments, paving the way for widespread autonomous flights.
The collaboration between Telefónica Open Gateway and Bluenest demonstrates how smart connectivity and digital solutions can transform air mobility, delivering tangible benefits for society, particularly in healthcare contexts where every minute matters.
