Year after year Barcelona hosts the world's leading technology and mobility event, the Mobile World Congress. At this year's event, Telefónica and GSMA Chairman José María Álvarez-Pallete unveiled the Telefónica Open Gateway initiative in collaboration with the GSMA, which aims to transform communications networks into platforms.
A global telco industry initiative to build next generation services
The chairman highlighted the opportunities it will bring for the sector and the benefits that the different Open Gateway solutions will bring to users. He framed this initiative within the "tsunami of innovation" that is leading to the evolution of new technologies. These developments, together with the evolution of the sector, will offer services and solutions with real uses and applications.
On the other hand, Chema Alonso, Chief Digital Officer of Telefónica, also spoke about the first collaborations with other companies such as Microsoft, Google Cloud, Vonage or Amazon Web Services (AWS). It also announced the launch of a call for proposals, the Wayra Open Gateway Activation Program, to look for startups that would like to start working on use cases with the new telco APIs with an investment of up to 5 million euros and the possibility of business development and access to the company's customer network.
