Age Verification API

The standardized Age Verification API allows you to determine whether a user is over the age required to access subscriptions that require it by regulation, using data verified by the mobile operator.

It is essential in regulated sectors such as online gambling, alcohol sales, or age-restricted digital media to block unauthorized access and eliminate fake accounts. The Age Verification API helps to do this privately and in real time.

What can it be used for?

The Age Verification API helps companies identify the age threshold of mobile line users in real time.

Process simplification

Eliminates the need for users to send identification photos or undergo biometric checks during the first interaction by leveraging data verified by the mobile operator to confirm age instantly.

Confidence and traceability

Leverage data collected and verified by the mobile operator during SIM card registration or customer account setup. This ensures that age verification is based on a reliable and legally compliant source, rather than on data provided by the user themselves.

Real-time verification

Ideal for verifying users, controlling access and handling large volumes of transactions, without the common problems of verification with documents or images.

Configurable thresholds

The API allows you to set the minimum age (such as 18 or 21) according to your business needs, industry, or local laws. Verifications are tailored to each market and include user-defined filters to improve accuracy and avoid incorrect results.

Standardised access

The standardised Age Verification API with CAMARA enables a single integration to work with operators worldwide, without the need for customised agreements.

Privacy by design

Use only the necessary data: indicate whether the person meets the minimum age requirement (e.g., 18 years old) without sharing their date of birth, documents, or other personal data. This provides better protection for confidential information.

Use cases

Authentication and fraud prevention

Protection of minors on social media

Social media faces a growing need to ensure safe spaces for minors, preventing their exposure to inappropriate content or risky interactions. Age verification based solely on user acceptance has proven insufficient, requiring more accurate and secure mechanisms. The integration of identity verification solutions using biometric technologies or digital documentation on social media allows the user's real age to be confirmed when registering or attempting to access sensitive content. This approach helps to comply with regulatory requirements without compromising the user experience, by offering fast, intuitive and privacy-friendly processes.

Access to content for adults

Access to adult content online is regulated by laws that require effective age verification systems to protect minors. In most countries, platforms must ensure that users are over 18 years of age before allowing access to this content. However, traditional methods such as credit card use or document uploads create friction and reduce conversion. Faced with this challenge, there is a need for a simpler, more secure and reliable age verification solution that balances regulatory compliance with a good user experience. Efficient verification improves consumer confidence and strengthens legal compliance in sensitive digital environments.

Online betting and gaming platforms

Online gambling and gaming platforms must verify the age of users before allowing them to access their services, as part of KYC and AML legal requirements. This includes casinos, sports betting, and lotteries, among others. In regulated markets, such as the United Kingdom, verification must be performed even before accessing free games. Failure to comply can result in penalties or the loss of licences. Since users expect to start playing immediately, age verification solutions must be fast, secure and compliant with regulations. Implementing automated, real-time processes allows operators to comply with regulations without sacrificing the user experience.

E-commerce (Age-Restricted Goods) and Retail

E-commerce businesses that sell age-restricted products must ensure that the buyer meets the legal requirements without compromising the user experience. Digital age verification solutions allow the buyer's identity to be confirmed securely during the purchase process, reducing the abandonment rate and avoiding delivery failures due to lack of verification. The integration of technologies such as biometrics or online document validation ensures regulatory compliance, facilitates the operation of supermarkets and digital retailers, and protects minors from improper access to restricted products.

Safe advertising with age verification

In regulated categories such as alcohol, gambling, tobacco, and adult content, ensuring that advertisements only reach adults is a growing challenge. The reliability of self-reported ages, the disappearance of cookies, shared devices, and privacy restrictions complicate advertising targeting. Added to this is the tightening of national regulations (18+/21+), which increases the risk of exposure to minors, regulatory sanctions, loss of ROAS and damage to brand image. Advanced technological solutions minimise these risks by applying more accurate contextual controls, frictionless authentication and environment validation, reducing the operational burden without compromising compliance.

FAQs

It's an API that instantly confirms whether a user meets a required minimum age threshold (e.g., 13+, 16+, 18+, or 21+) using mobile network operator–verified data, without exposing the date of birth or other personal details.

CAMARA, the open-source project led by the Linux Foundation in collaboration with the GSMA, aims to universalise network APIs under the same standards for all telecommunications companies.

Social media, online gaming, gambling and betting, e-commerce of age-restricted goods, adult content streaming, and regulated digital advertising.

It prevents underage access to restricted services, content, or products, helping companies comply with national and international regulations while reducing legal risks, penalties, and reputational damage.

During sign-up, checkout, or content access, the platform requests the user's mobile number. The API queries the mobile operator to verify if the subscriber meets the required age threshold and returns a yes/no result—without sharing additional personal data.

It's instant, low-friction, and privacy-friendly, avoiding the need for users to upload documents or take photos, and reducing drop-off rates during registration or purchase.

Yes. The API returns only a binary confirmation (eligible/not eligible) and does not share personal identifiers, meeting the GDPR principles of data minimization and necessity.

It reduces friction compared to traditional methods, keeping high conversion rates and preventing legitimate users from abandoning due to long or intrusive verification flows.

Yes. It can serve as a pre-filter to block minors before a full KYC process, or as a step-up layer in more comprehensive identity verification flows.

It's based on mobile operator data, which is highly reliable and difficult to falsify—unlike self-declared age, cookies, or some third-party data providers that may be outdated.

Yes. As long as the user's account or session is linked to a mobile number, the verification can be triggered regardless of the device used.

The API can be configured for different adult age limits (e.g., 18+, 21+) depending on the regulatory requirement, service type, or content category.

Age thresholds always apply to the confirmation of legal adulthood — the API cannot be configured for underage thresholds. Any request below the legal age limit will return a 400 OUT_OF_RANGE error due to regulatory restrictions.

Additionally, the API has access to internal indicators that allow it to help determine whether certain content categories should be restricted, further supporting compliance and content suitability checks.

It's built on CAMARA/Open Gateway standards, enabling multi-MNO coverage with one integration and consistent policy controls.
