Cabify integrates our network APIs to streamline its onboarding processes

At MWC25, we talked about our collaboration with one of the world's leading urban mobility platforms, where they will be integrating the Number Verification API to improve their users' experience.

As usual at this event, Mobile World Congress 2025 brought us all the latest industry news in terms of innovation and connectivity. At the event, which gathered the major stakeholders of the digital ecosystem, the team from Telefónica Open Gateway made our commitment to open collaboration clear through new strategic agreements. One of those reached was with Cabify, a Spanish mobility company that develops technology to transform cities into better living spaces and make them more sustainable, accessible and humane, which has more than 50 million users in more than 40 cities in Spain, Latin America and the rest of the world.

The announcement was made during the "Open collaboration to innovate" talk at the Telefónica Agora on the first day of the Mobile World Congress. Chema Alonso, Chief Digital Officer of Telefónica and CEO of Telefónica Digital Innovation, and Carlos Herrara Yague, CTO of Cabify, spoke on stage about the possibilities of this collaboration. Cabify is a company that invests 25 million euros a year in R&D and, thanks to Open Gateway's tools, they detected a business opportunity to make the onboarding of new passengers as efficient as possible.

The onboarding process is one of the most critical moments in any digital application. Until now, Cabify required new users to enter their phone number and receive an OTP code via SMS or WhatsApp, which could lead to delays and a possible disconnection of the registration flow. Users demand agility and time savings in their digital interactions, so this method can lead to friction and abandonment of the process. "User patience is finite and it is very good for us to have that extra time for what’s really complicated—that sometimes it's had to find ways of getting around a city", remarked Carlos Herrera, during the MWC25 presentation.

With the implementation of our Number Verification API, this procedure has become smoother. Now, when a user enters their phone number, a silent validation takes place, eliminating the need for additional steps. This happens in just 10 seconds. The integration has not only improved the user experience, but also significantly reduces the abandonment rate during registration, optimising the conversion of new customers.

In addition to simplifying access, this solution has brought a key benefit in terms of security. The Number Verification API ensures that the number entered matches the number of the device where the request is made. By eliminating the additional steps, the risks associated with credential theft or interception of OTP codes are reduced. In this way, Cabify has been able to offer a more secure and reliable environment to its users,  without compromising ease of use.

David del Val, director of Telefónica Open Gateway, and Abel Muiño, VP of Engineering at Cabify, went into the technical and operational details of this collaboration in the talk "Telefónica Open Gateway: driving revenue growth". They highlighted the positive impact that the integration of the Number Verification API will have on the improved user experience and increased operational efficiency of the platform. In addition, as part of DevCon 2025 at the Talent Arena, in the talk "Code session: Onboarding to Cabify with Number Verification", developers were able to see the application code live. Laura Lacarra, our Head Developer Relations, and Pablo Villot, Principal Software Engineer at Cabify, demonstrated to the audience the simplicity of integrating this one-line API.

This collaboration is a clear example of how the openness of our networks enables companies to improve their services and optimise their processes. By facilitating faster and more secure onboarding, we are helping Cabify strengthen its position as a leader in quality and security in the mobility sector.
