GSMA Open Gateway 2024: First Half-Yearly Report 2024

Explore the GSMA report, with an analysis of the initiative that poses a fundamental breakthrough in the telco sector, unlocking new network capabilities and greater collaboration to improve global connectivity.
Open Gateway is based on harnessing the capabilities of networks, exposing their potential through standardised APIs. Since its launch at Mobile World Congress 2023, the initiative has seen significant progress, with almost 50 carriers representing 65% of the global mobile market share. This effort shows the Telco sector's commitment to continue to evolve, drive growth and innovation through network APIs .

The report " GSMA Open Gateway: State of the Market, H1 2024", was recently published. It takes a look at the evolution of the project in the first half of the year: latest developments, strategic goals, commercial launches, and so on. Today we will tell you the main points of this report and the role we have played at Telefónica as one of the leaders of the global initiative.

How Open Gateway has evolved in 2024

If 2023 was the year of the launch of Open Gateway, this year has been the time for the implementation of its solutions.

Throughout 2024 there has been a growth in the number of carriers taking part in the initiative, with the number of telcos doubling in the last 12 months. These cover all regions, with Asia and Europe the strongest. In addition, we have seen numerous announcements from carriers announcing joint commercial launches . Many of them have focused on fraud protection and security, with tools such as the Number Verification API (which provides a seamless process that can replace manual SMS confirmations) and the SIM Swap API (designed to detect cases of stolen devices used illegally for unauthorised transactions).

On the commercial side, great progress has been made, with more and more carriers offering ready-to-use APIs to developers and other distributors. In line with original expectations, the demand side (developers, distributors and companies) is responding favourably, and activity is expected to increase in the second half of 2024.

Telefónica's role in the global initiative

Within the framework of our project Telefónica Open Gateway project, we are actively involved in the initiative in a leading role. That's why, since its launch a year ago, we have been pioneers in demonstrating that standardised network APIs can transform connectivity and create new business opportunities. We believe that these tools enabled by the initiative allow for a  better integration of services and a clear optimisation of the user experience. And, consequently, they help to reduce costs and improve operational efficiency. For this reason, we work with other carriers and industry players to follow common standards and develop interoperable platforms.

We have participated in several commercial launches throughout our region. One of the most prominent was the first. In December 2023, Claro, TIM and Vivo (Telefonica), announced the launch of three network APIs in Brazil focused on improving digital security. Thanks to our joint efforts, the Brazilian market will have new tools to tackle online fraud, equipping itself with innovative digital services that bring security to its users. This launch was followed by other key milestones in which we have been involved, such as the commercial start-up in Spain and Germany in February 2024.

In this way, we have a number of APIs that are already commercially available in different countries. As mentioned above, the first launches are focused on anti-fraud, but there are many more to come. Here we tell you what each of these APIS brings to the table:

Device Location Verification API | Brazil. It allows you to check whether a device is located in a certain location, so that fraudulent transactions can be detected and prevented. This helps to increase customer protection. This API performs instant validation, based on the mobile carrier's network information.

API Number Verification | Germany, Brazil and Spain. This provides a more reliable authentication process of a user's mobile number, providing a simple form of validation for any company using mobile numbers and one-time passwords via SMS.

API SIM Swap | Germany, Brazil and Spain. Facilitates detection of recent changes to the SIM card associated with a particular phone number. The confirmation provided by this interface allows the entity to be notified in a more agile manner, reducing the risk of possible fraudulent account takeover attacks.

These tools to combat digital fraud can be integrated into a wide range of sectors, where authentication and security are essential. We have case studies with real companies where our network capabilities have been integrated: frete.com, Itaú, Daycoval... This expansion demonstrates the versatility and impact of APIs in the digital transformation of various industries, supporting innovation and technological progress.

Telefónica's role in the global initiative.
To make these APIs available to companies and developers, we have enabled two programmes on our website:

The Developer Hub is a space for testing out APIs and experimenting with one's own use cases. Throughout the process, developers will be provided with exclusive technical material and resources (white papers, webinars, technical documentation, etc.). Join now!

The Partner Program enables companies to leverage Open Gateway's APIs to power their business, enrich their services and improve the end-user experience. Registered partners have access to technical resources for your company's developers to understand how these Open Gateway APIs will work, and commercial material, with additional use cases and case studies that you could implement in your own company's sector or industry or within your customers' solutions. In addition, they will find guidance and E2E support to define the best route to market. Sign up here!

According to the "Open Gateway State of the Market" report, published by GSMA Intelligence, this is only the beginning, with growth expected in the second half of the year, adding new countries, regions and commercial launches.
